Division Commander and His Chief of Staff

Major Gen. John M. Willems was Spearhead
Commander from April, 1955, to July, 1956, taking the division
from recruitment and organization, to heavy training, to deployment
to Europe, and into initial training maneuvers in Germany. It
was a hectic 15 months. His Chief of Staff, Col. Jame H. Polk
(shown further below), later became a 4-star general, serving
as Commander in Chief, U.S. Army Europe, from June, 1967 to March,
1971. |
