SIMULATED 3AD NUCLEAR BLAST IN 1965

See diagrams of simulator device

3rd Armored's 23rd Engineers create a mock nuclear blast at Grafenwoehr in the fall of 1965 as part of a demonstration for V Corps and NATO brass. The mushroom cloud rose approximately 500 feet above a desolate plain. The purpose of simulations was to prepare troops for the sight and sound of a tactical nuclear attack. The device used by the engineers was most likely an early version of the Atomic Explosion Simulator M142 (see link above).
