On July 2, 1955, a 3rd Armored Division Proclamation Ceremony was held at the World War Memorial Building in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the beginning of an intensive recruiting program designed to bring the Division up to the required strength of 16,000 troops for Operation Gyroscope, in which Spearhead would replace the U.S. 4th Infantry Division in NATO's critical defensive position astride the Fulda Gap.
