The Vire River Bridge - Airel, France

  John O'Brien "stands guard" at the entrance to the bridge, which was a little more busy on the night of July 7, 1944, according to Spearhead in the West (page 67), where " ... Combat Command "B", led by Brig. Gen. John J. Bohn, crossed the Vier River at Airel under heavy shell fire. Division MP's remained at their posts to direct traffic over the Vire bridge in a rain of explosives. The action which began here was a baptism of fire for CCB ..." In 1994, the mayor of Airel showed O'Brien where the 3AD plaque would be conspicuously installed on a concrete column at one end of the bridge.
