 INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOS

Photo Below: T/5 Riss Eick (pronounced "Ike") and his tools of the trade -- a turret of four .50 caliber machine guns on an M-16 half-track. This was taken in Belgium in Sept., 1944. (Photo by Pfc. Stephen Spirounias)

The Russ Eick collection, shown in this section as only a sampling, is tucked away at his Connecticut home in a scrapbook -- cherished but, until now, unpublished. His photos show a talented, natural "eye," whether he took the picture himself or directed the scene. His battery mate, Stephen Spirounias, often assisted in taking the photos with Russ' camera -- a folding, bellows model which used roll film and produced a negative of about 2x3 inches. For safety's sake, the camera was not brought out during combat operations. Russ joined the 3rd Armored Division in December, 1943, as part of the 486th Anti-Aircraft Battalion and saw action as a quad-.50's turret gunner to the war's end.
