Staff Sgt. Aurio Pierro (right) and Pfc John
Piowarski from Co B, 33rd Armored Regiment, are in front of a
concealed German 75mm anti-tank gun overlooking a mine field
east of Stolberg, Germany, in November, 1944. The mine field
with guns had protected (unsuccessfully) an approach to the towns
of Hastenrath and Scherpenseel. Two of the high-velocity German
75mm shells were set up at left for the photo, with the 37mm
shell of a M5 Stuart light tank in the middle, for comparison.
At the time, Pierro was a platoon sergeant and commander of a
Stuart. Pfc Piowarski, his tank gunner, was killed in action
a month later at Petit Coo, Belgium, in the Battle of the Bulge. |
